Northern Flicker – DE

IMG_2854 Northern Flicker – Colaptes auratus

This bird was a thrill to catch. I was at Ashalnd Nature Center today and I was trying to catch some field birds so I sat on the edge of a teaching structure and sat as quietly as I possibly could. Then things started happening around me.

This bird flew across my field of vision and settled in a near-by tree. It sat long enough for me to take as many pictures as I wanted.

I got distracted by another bird and when I looked IMG_2855 back it was gone. Now that have looked through my pictures, there were tons of these all around.

This is one of the the only migratory woodpecker in North America. There are two varieties of Northern Flickers: red shafted and yellow-shafted.
