Black Vulture – Coragyps atratus

These were some freaky looking birds. We came across them when we visited the Augustine Nature Preserve. There were two of them sitting on the roof of an abandoned building. We got within 10 yards of them before one of them got excited and flew off.

These animals look like they are out of the movie the Dark Crystal or the weird looking protector creatures from the Fifth Element.

Delaware seems to be at the most northern corner of this bird’s range. I probably saw some of these when I lived in South America.
